Alpacas on the run!

The flock has been divided and the alpacas are wandering in maze-like areas, unable to go back home. Help these sweet animals and get them back to the safety of their fence.

Simple enough, right? Well, it all depends on your hand-eye coordination. Will you be able to journey through mazes of increasing difficulty and gather them all? 

They're counting on you!

The game

Escape from Alpatraz! is a game developed for Oculus Quest, aiming to exploit the system's untethered nature thus allowing  a challenging VR experience both from a standing and a sitting position.

As the player your task is to "grab&drag" the lost animals and guide them through a maze-like level back to the safe area.  Touching the borders of the maze or triggering one of its many traps forces you to restart the process, testing your eye-hand coordination. 

Your play area is shaped like a "coin-op cabinet", vaguely inspired by arcade machines from the '70s. Just a touch of vintage, we're sentimental after all.

The game is entirely playable with only your hands, but it will also support touch controllers. It will also include a series of cosmetic upgrades for those who seek to customize their gaming experience to its full extent.

Game mechanics

The game is entirely playable by just using your hands.

Once started, you will be placed in front of the game cabinet. From there, just tap the green button on the cabinet's table.

The "big screen" of the cabinet is where you will operate in order to complete each level of the game. Your objective is to guide each wandering alpaca back to safety. 

In order to do so, just move your hand on top of the alpacas at the beginning of the level and close your thumb and index to pinch the animals. Once in your grasp, simply drag the alpacas through the maze, aiming for the black and white flag representing the end of the level. A brief tune will notify your success.

The path you need to follow is marked by the brown (earthen) trail on the screen. Moving an alpaca outside of the path will force you to restart the process, requiring careful movements in your surroundings. In case of a restart, the alpaca you were dragging will be moved back to its original position and you will be given a new attempt.

The same effect will be produced if you touch one of the moving items on the maze (eg: spinning logs), set as traps to increase the difficulty of advanced levels. A lion will also wander certain stages, acting the same way as the traps and thus forcing you to restart when an alpaca comes into contact with this predator.

If you manage to guide every alpaca from its starting position to the goal, you will complete the stage and unlock a different, more difficult maze. To proceed to the next level, press the green button on the cabinet's table

Under the big screen, two different signs show the number of alpacas that still require your help (on the left) and the ones that were already saved (on the right).

You can also see animated alpacas wandering on the left meadow (representing the ones you still have to save), while those secured inside the fence of the right meadow are the ones you already guided back to safety.

After each level is complete, press again the green button to advance to a new level,

Escape from Alpatraz! is currently under development. Every change will be documented in the devlog.

A free demo of the game with a small set of playable levels is already available and free to download. We are eager to receive your feedback and we will actively work to implement suggestions from the community.
